Native Flowers - Some Facts About Them. Dial A Hamper Stocks Native Australian Flowers For Perth Delivery

Australian Native Flowers are a great looking long lasting often beautifully scented flowers to have delivered to someone in Perth.

With over 25,000 species of flowering plants, Australia is only matched by South Africa in the abundance and diversity of its native flowers. There are so many flowering plants in Australia that they haven’t even named them all yet – some botanists estimate there are over 30,000 species. Many of these are endemic, which means they are found nowhere else. Native flowers have been used to decorate Australian homes since settlement, but became more popular during Federation (1901) and the Bicentennial celebrations (1988). Now many forms are used as cut flowers, both locally and internationally.

All states throughout Australia are home to distinctive native flowers, but Western Australia is the centre for this amazing diversity. There are over 12,000 species listed as endemic to WA, and many more are yet to be described. Many of the native flower species commonly used as cut flowers originated in WA, such as kangaroo paw, most Banksias, Dryandra, Geleznowia, and Geraldton waxflower. The wildflower season in WA occurs each year from July to October, and is considered one of the top botanical wonders of the world. Flowers start blooming north of Geraldton in July and slowly progress south. There are many reserves and bush areas along the coast and east into the drier areas, and in some places there are fields of everlastings and other wildflowers as far as you can see. The Wildflower Society of Western Australia website is full of information and has a great map of viewing locations around Perth for those who are interested.

Some South African flowers are often mistaken for Australian natives, which is not surprising as these two countries have very similar climates and the flowers of each country are similar in structure. Proteas, Leucadendron, Leucospermum and Erica are all South African natives that are sometimes mistaken for Australian locals. The tea-tree (Leptospermum) is also often thought of as Australian, which many garden tea-tree varieties are. But the most common cut flower tea-trees are bred from Leptospermum scoparium, which is a New Zealand species.

Most native flowers have woody stems and these will need to be re-cut with sharp secateurs, and immediately placed in water. Never bash or split the woody stem ends. As a general rule, keep cool whenever possible – there are no tropical Australian natives used regularly as cut flowers. Strip all the leaves from the lower half of each stem, then re cut at least 2 cm off each stem and place in cold water immediately. A preservative is recommended, but not essential. It is important to replace vase water with fresh preservative every day as all natives are thirsty flowers. Most native flowers are not sensitive to ethylene gas, but there are two notable exceptions. Waxflower and Waratah are both sensitive, so keep them away from fruit, car exhausts and cigarette smoke.

What Flowers Do St Anne’s Florist Recommend to Send to Perth Hospitals?
Flowers are just the best thing to send someone in a Perth Hospital, they are so bright and cheerful!
As Vase availability at Perth Hospitals is often very limited, we recommend sending Flower Arrangements that are self contained in a Box
We do not recommend sending Flowers with a high level of fragrance as being in a confined space of a Hospital room, the smell often becomes overpowering – we don’t recommend sending Flowers such as Oriental Lilies.
A number of the High Dependency Wards, Intensive Care Units and Burns Wards do not accept flowers or plant material of any kind. We have Gift Hampers and Gift Baskets that are suitable to send to these wards. Please check with the relevant Perth Hospital to see if Flowers will be accepted on the Ward the recipient is on.

The Benefits Of Buying Flowers Online Through Dial A HamperWebsite

As the popularity of Online Shopping has increased, so to has the amount of Florists with website offering Online Flower Ordering. The ordering of flowers online is such a convenient way to order, it can be done quickly and securely from the comfort of your home, office or even in your car from your smart phone. The added benefit is that you often can see the flowers that you are ordering with a full description of them.

Consumers looking to order flowers for delivery need to be wary of the websites they order and buy flowers online from. With the explosion of Florists having websites, there has also been an explosion of websites created by Relay type businesses. We are rather unique in that we are a retail store whereby local orders placed with us either on line or by phone are actually completed and filled by our team of in house florists. We are NOT a third party distribution website relay business or call centre type operation whereby your order is taken by an operator (with no actual floral industry training or experience) with your order distributed to various third party florists with a 'management' fee taken. This translates to less flowers being able to be given by the third party florist accepting the order coupled with the fact that you are not dealing directly with the people that are designing and delivering the arrangement.

All florists employed by Dial A Hamper  have completed a Certificate in Floral Design (or its overseas equivalent), with extensive on the job training and experience ensuring that the highest standard of design is applied to all of our floral arrangements, Gift baskets and Gift hampers. Forming part of the Dial A Hamper team are our three full time couriers, who weave our company owned vans throughout the Perth metropolitan area daily ensuring the flowers, gift baskets or gift hampers ordered arrive in the same great condition they leave our Perth Flower Shop.
Dial A Hamper having been established in 1970, was one of the first Perth Florists to create a Florist Website for its customers to order through. The ordering system is 100% secure, with all credit card details entered through secure web pages with the data being encrypted for security.

Dial A Hamper has an extensive range of Baby Hampers, Gift Hampers, Coroporate Hampers, Fresh Flowers, Soft toys & Teddies and much more. You can order online at www.dialahamper.com.au, call us on 08 9381 9191 or come into the stora at 111 Newcastle St Perth WA 6000.

Caring for your Cut Flowers delivered by Dial a Hamper

Cut Flower Care

This is a series of blog posts by Dial A Hamper to assist our customers with caring for the various cut flowers and potted plants that we sell here at Dial A Hamper.

How can you keep your fresh flowers looking fabulous longer, just how they’ve been delivered by St Anne’s Florist and Gift Baskets? Here are some helpful tips to help your flowers last longer:

• Source the freshest, highest quality flowers available (Dial A Hamper has this step already covered for you by sourcing from only the best flowers growers, we restock flowers daily at the markets to ensure that what we have in the shop is the freshest available).

• For arrangements in vases or self contained boxes please make sure that the water is topped up upon it being delivered to you, then check and keep topped up daily or at least every second day. This helps ensures your flowers to last longer.

• For flowers that are not contained within their own vase or self contained box trim all flower stems with sharp clean secateurs or scissors diagonally approx. 2-3cm’s from the bottom of the stem as soon as possible after receiving the flowers. By cutting the stems diagonally you are increasing the surface area in which the exposed cell capillaries can draw in water.

• Ethylene gas is released by decaying leaf and stem trimmings, ripening fruit, cigarettes and motor vehicle exhaust gases. So trim/strip all foliage/leaves that will sit below the intended vase water line. (Do not buy cut flowers from vendors who have flower stock displayed out front of shops by the roadside or that have been standing in the sun as these simply won’t last).

• Foliage on most flowers can be removed by simply grasping around the flower stem and then pulling downward gently. However hard stemmed or stems with thorns such as roses can be stripped using a small sharp knife pulled along the stem.

• Choose a clean vase for your flowers. (Dirty vases decrease the life of your flowers due to harmful bacteria shortening the life of your flowers). Clean your vase with water and a few drops of bleach, leave for a couple of hours and then scrub the vase clean.

• Do not use metallic vases as these react detrimentally with fresh cut flowers.

• Arrange your flowers in the most appropriate vase, fill the vase with water ensuring the water level does not go higher than the bottom of the foliage/leaves.

Now that you have your flowers in a suitable vase, the following points are just as important to maximize the vase life of your flowers:

• Keep your fresh flowers as cool as possible; out of direct sunlight; out of drafts, away from air-conditioning vents/units, away from heaters, away from lamps and strong lighting in close proximity.

• Keep your flowers away from all ripening fruit and vegetables. (see ethylene gas above)

• Re-cut stems approx 2-3cm’s from the bottom and replace water at least every second day (more often if possible and convenient to do so).

• When you are changing the water (as above) it is a good idea to scrub the vase clean with a diluted bleach solution at the same time. By changing the water and cleaning the vase regularly you are decreasing the levels of bacteria that detrimentally affect the vase life of your flowers.

• Remove any decaying stems, wilted or dead flowers that have ‘seen better days’.

• Sit back and absorb the beauty of fresh cut flowers.

By following the above steps, you are going to assist in maximizing the vase life of your fresh cut flowers that have been delivered to you by Dial A Hamper - the Perth Florist everyone knows and trusts.

Same Day Perth Flowers and Flowers Perth can be ordered with Dial A Hamper (08) 9381 9191, online at www.dialahamper.com.au or come into the store at 111 Newcastle St Perth, WA 6000

How to Care for Your Cymbidium Orchids - Gift Baskets

This is part of Dial a Hamper  Blog series to assist our customers with caring for the various cut flowers and potted plants that we sell here at Dial a Hamper

Dial a Hamper sources top quality cymbidium orchids from a local Perth specialist cymbidium orchid grower, when quality plants are grown and bought it makes the care of your orchid alot easier and more fulfilling.

Cymbidium Orchid Care

Cymbidium orchids are hardy plants and are easy to grow, they are a great gift to send to some one as they flower spikes last for a long time and with the correct care will flower again next season. Cymbidium orchids like similar conditions to humans, temperatures in the 20’s (degree’s) humidity of about 50% and shade in the summer.

Most amateurs can grow orchids well but have difficulty in flowering them. This usually can be overcome by finding a position where the plant receives more light. A healthy well grown cymbidium orchid that is cared for correctly will produce flowers every year and a mature plant can produce from 10 to 20 flower spikes.

Best Position To Grow Your Cymbidium Orchid

Cymbidium orchids will be tolerant of full sun year round however will prefer a protected position away from the direct hot sun of summer. During the hot summer months especially here in Perth it is recommended to find a position where they will receive 50% sunlight. This can often be found under a gum tree or a similar tree with not too thick a canopy, under the eaves of your house (though remembering to keep water topped up as they wont be receiving any water apart from what you provide), under a pergola is great especially if it has 50% shade cloth cover.

It should be noted that too little sunlight on your cymbidium will result in a decrease in flowers being produced by the plant.

It is best to grow your cymbidium orchid off the ground, allowing airflow into the root ball and this also helps keep slugs, slaters and snails down.

Watering of your Cymbidium Orchid

Cymbidium Orchids require watering all year round however this will vary according to the positioning of your orchid, the potting mix used, the temperature and winds, atmospheric conditions to mention a few factors. Plants that are left to dry out for extended periods will survive however flowering the following flowering season will be negatively affected.

In winter, once or twice a week should be sufficient, while in summer 3 or 4 times per week is recommended whilst at the height of summer daily or even twice daily watering may be required (preferably at night to help reduce the temperature). This drop in temperature assists in the production of flower spikes.

Thoroughly saturate the potting mix when watering, stopping when water comes out of the bottom of the pot. We find submerging the cymbidium Orchid in a bucket of water for a few hours really beneficial in soaking the potting medium, while also not wasting water.

Let the potting mix be the gauge as to whether more or less watering is required, if the top is moist or the pot cold watering probably isn’t required.

Fertilizing/ Feeding your Cymbidium Orchid

Like all plants, cymbidium orchids require regular feeding to help produce vibrant healthy plants with good flower production. A slow release fertilizer throughout the year will help the plant, products such as Osmocote Plus are recommended. Some half strength liquid fertilizer such as Thrive, Aquasol and the like a few times over the warmer summer months (from September to May).

Don’t over do a high nitrogen content all purpose fertilizer as this will promote leaf growth whilst taking away from the flower spike production.

Re-Potting your Cymbidium Orchid

Healthy plants should grow 1 to 2 new bulbs every year off the previous year’s bulb growth. The pine barks often used in orchid potting mix breaks down over time, so re-potting is required every 2-4 years (depending on the size of plant, number of new bulbs and condition of potting mix).

When the plants get too large, with a number of bulbs dividing the plants may be necessary. When dividing, try and make every new plant contain 3 green bulbs. The old bulbs without leaves can be potted individually, and will normally produce a new shoot which will grow to a flowering plant.

Choose a plastic pot that doesn’t give the newly repotted plant too much room, enough room only for say 2- 3 years growth. Weathered pine bark is a great medium to plant your orchids in, they should be 10-15mm in size. You should never plant Cymbidiums Orchids into sand as this will destroy its roots..

The best time to divide plants is after flowering and in spring.

Diseases affecting your Cymbidium Orchid

The main disease and pest issue problem is fungal infection. This can be non existent if good air movement in the growing area is encouraged and the plants are not kept in a dark excessively wet area. Should fungal issues occur it may be prudent to minimize watering over a few week period, elevate the plant so it receives good airflow and treat with a sulphur or similar powder treatment.

Cymbidium Orchids are a great looking, long lasting plant that if kept correctly will continue to produce over a long period of time. Its for this reason that its such a great plant to send to someone instead of cut fresh flowers with the Perth Florist evryone knows and trusts - Dial a Hamper.
You can order your Cymbidium Orchids online at www.dialahamper.com.au, call us on                  08 9381 9191 or come into our Perth Florist and Perth Flower Shop at 111 Newcastle Street, Perth Western Australia 6000
